LJB began this project by conducting a feasibility study for the adaptive reuse of the historic Lima Train Station (1887) as offices for the Lima Utilities Department. The building owner then retained LJB for the renovation design, and LJB worked closely with Chambers, Murphy and Burge Restoration Architects to ensure strict adherence to the standards of the National Register of Historic Places. One key challenge on this project was to provide accurate space planning that would satisfy the functional requirements of the utilities department and its customers.
LJB also designed an addition on the front of the building to reflect the design of the historic entryway, as well as a rear addition to accommodate ADA-compliant restrooms.
Fire damage to the building also required structural analysis and subsequent reinforcement of roof trusses. Other LJB services included survey and site design for a drive-thru customer window, as well as custom-designed cabinetry for the customer service area.
