WPXI
This $14 million television studio for WPXI-NBC contains state-of-the-art digital broadcasting and production equipment. Interior spaces in the 69,000-square-foot facility include a production studio, news room, control room and two stories of office space. The 17-acre site includes a 100-foot transmitting tower and an on-site helipad, which required the designers to employ concrete roof deck over sound-sensitive portions of the facility.
LJB provided structural engineering and steel detailing services for the structure, which was built with a conventional steel frame, metal studs and a masonry exterior. Although the facility is built into the side of a hill, shallow foundations were used after the project was value engineered to incorporate deep dynamic compaction. The building also includes several different roof elevations, and significant portions of access flooring to accommodate cabling and HVAC under the finished floor.
