Solving Challenges Across the Mine Lifecycle

Every mine is built on a ground model, and every ground model carries uncertainty. Weak zones, water and changing stress conditions can turn a sound plan into downtime, rework or a safety event. We help mining clients reduce that uncertainty with integrated geotechnical, underground design, risk and construction expertise.

Challenges: What We Solve

Variable geology, weak ground and complex hydrogeology raise design and construction risk.

Difficult underground environments demand support systems that protect people and assets.

Every day of downtime costs. Designs need to be practical to build and quick to implement.

Shafts, drifts and portals must serve current operations and long-term value.

Services: What We Do

Mine Geotechnical Investigations

  • Drilling programs
  • Rock core logging
  • Geology and hydrogeology
  • Instrumentation and interpretive reporting that turn data into decisions

Underground Mapping and Characterization

  • Geologic and structural mapping in drifts
  • Raises, shafts and portals
  • LiDAR and reality capture for as-builts and change detection
  • Rock mass classification and ground models that support design and sequencing

Rock Mechanics and Ground Control

  • Stability analysis
  • Ground behavior and support evaluation
  • Support concepts for bolts, mesh, shotcrete, steel sets and liners
  • Rehabilitation strategies for deteriorated or changing ground

Shafts, Portals and Mine Infrastructure

  • Site characterization
  • Excavation approach and sequencing
  • Temporary and permanent support
  • Constructability reviews for access, temporary works and site constraints

Risk, Baseline and Construction Support

  • Geotechnical baseline and data reports
  • Independent review
  • Risk registers and workshops
  • Field engineering and claims avoidance

Legacy Mine Risk and Redevelopment

  • Subsidence screening
  • Mine stability assessment
  • Interaction with surface development, reuse and mitigation concepts for owners, developers and public agencies

Why LJB?

  • Integrated expertise: With geotechnical, design, risk and construction support in one team, nothing gets lost in handoffs.
  • Risk-based approach: We identify ground and construction risks early and manage them deliberately.
  • Practical, constructible designs: Our real-world field experience turns complex conditions into workable plans.
  • Long-term value: We plan and design durable underground infrastructure that supports safe, efficient operations for the life of the mine.

Featured Project: Grosvenor Mine Access Drifts

Moranbah, Queensland, Australia | Construction cost: $86 million

Two inclined mine access drifts (960 m transport drift and 830 m conveyor drift at 7 to 9 degrees) driven by earth pressure balance TBM. Our team designed the precast concrete segmental lining and refuge bays, assessed ground-structure interaction, evaluated load cases and reviewed constructability.
